There were probably many turfers who almost choked on their coffee that day. It is like a half-day excursion by motorboat or a full day by sailboat to get to the zone. No regular traffic to that island. The first bit out to Holmsund was really nice, good weather and calm waters.
We felt like princes! My only disappointment was that we would not have time to get out and take the zone before the new round started.
When we left Holmsund and the protective beaches behind us, however, the situation in the boat became completely different. Heavy waves that really made up for an interesting boat trip.
Sometimes the boat hung freely in the air, sometimes it landed with a strong thump on the water. It felt like the spine compressed at each landing. So it went on for about two hours, but in the end we were able to get ashore, our bodies fairly bruised, but alive.
We had expected a yellow zone but strangely enough, Bont still owned the zone even though it was a few minutes to one new round starts at noon in Sweden. We stepped into the zone and got our first take. And after a few minutes the zone turned wonderfully yellow and we could take it again. More happiness! After a much-needed coffee break, we were able to take the zone once more. Total happiness! This was followed by a two-hour total body massage of the third degree before we were back on the mainland again.
And after a week, the bruises on my left arm had almost disappeared. I had convulsively held on to the railing so as not to be thrown overboard. But what does one not do for a zone!?
Although I would not be very surprised if ZoneBanger eventually announces that he colored it purple. Personally my fave Turf moment of is taking the World Heritage zone Hufeisen in Berlin and with that take finally recieving the German Explorer medal.
And finally ollals from Sweden shares his tale of how Turf helped him back after surgery. I don't think he is alone in using Turf as a useful tool in recovery after illness. One part of the rehabilitation is to walk for 30 — 90 minutes every day.
Turf makes this fun. The medal for taking at least five zones every day encourage you to do your walking each day and not miss a single day. Due to my illness, I started late with the Daily, but the 10 and 30 day-medal is taken and the 60 day medal is not far away. One of the many advantages with Turf is that you can move at your own speed, including when you walk very slowly. I certainly have to move slowly for a while. I noticed that Turf has developed a version for companies. Maybe Turf is something for the rehabilitation at hospitals and a complement to walking indoors and using stand still bikes.
I will promote Turf in my rehab group. You find all info at www. There is also an offer for discounted accomodation for the Bonanza weekend, read more about it here. This will be the event to separate real winter hardened turfers from wishy-washy summer turfers. Here's a report from the inaugural annual Aviemore Turf event from Emjbee:. Organised by Cambla it was set in and around the beautiful Aviemore. The first of the winter snow was on the mountains and there was a 'brisk chill' in the air.
There was a bike event on the Saturday and then a more relaxed walking event on the Sunday around Glenmore forest park. It was my first ever Turf event, and despite having some technology failure phone died and signal problems at Glenmore, I loved every minute of it. There was a lovely prize-giving meal afterwards with many laughs, and a bonus prize of a wee bottle of beer or Prosecco for everyone who took part. Walnut came away with the first prize in the bike event and needless to say I got the wooden spoon!
At least I can blame technology. In Pargas there is a very special zone you have to make sure to take if you ever visit, at least accordingly to Ojarnst:. There are of course many zones placed around the quarry, that gives you the chance to experience a bit of industrial history. There have been industrial level mining operations here for over a century now. This because the small side cars used to transport rocks at the beginning of the 20th century looked like dogs.
Pictures here. In order to take the zone you must climb the newly built exercise stairs to reach the top and the zone. The stairs has steps, it is meters long and the top is 50 meters above the sea level. Here you will have nice view over the limestone quarry and the surrounding area.
Before the sorting of rocks was automated it was usually women who did the sorting by hand. Purple is the 'highest' colour, and a zone will become purple when you have taken it 51 times or more. As we are closing in on the end of another Turf year, CanC from Turku, Finland sums up how Turf has changed her life in the last four years:.
I drove everywhere. A friend had often spoken about Turf before I began in I started walking — miles a day. A year before ed. Adding Turf to my daily routine was added pleasure. I started dreaming of scoring higher on a bike. At the same time, my perspective on life evolved. I wanted to live more sustainably and I wanted to get more exercise. So, I sold my car. The same day I bought an e-bike. Days are shortening quickly but Turf gets us out the door!
Something that is getting turfers out on a daily basis is the new Daily-medal serie that was launced in September at the Bonanza. Later on when the technology took a huge leap forward and it was time to start the process. We tried some concepts that differed a lot from what we can see today. One idea was to divide the entire world into a grid of zones, so that zones were everywhere. A very interesting process that has given us a lot of guidance when new problems has arisen.
Turf borrows elements from traditional orientation and combines these with more traditional game elements, like points , achievement medals and player levels. Scattered all over the world, there are virtual areas, so-called zones , which players can take over and retain to acquire points and compete against other players. Zones are taken over when a player, with the help of the smartphone's GPS system, is in the location of the virtual zone in the real world.
Each zone gives the player s who take over it a certain number of points, both directly and over time. Turf is divided into game rounds of about one month each. The prize for the winner at the end of each round is, among other things, the opportunity to place your own winner zone on the virtual playing field.
The game's progress is updated in real time, which means that all events in the game are updated immediately. Events are common in Turf , both locally but also at national level.
Once a year, an official, independent game round, is organized, a Bonanza , where participants gather in a city and play an independent round for a few hours.
